Để hạn chế điều này, người ta thay thế cát tự nhiên bằng nhiều loại hạt mài hiệu quả hơn gấp nhiều lần.

Nhôm oxit: Một hạt mài cực kỳ sắc bén, bền lâu, có thể tái chế nhiều lần. Nó có màu trắng tinh khiết 99,5% và thường là màu nâu tiêu chuẩn. Bột oxit nhôm thường được sử dụng trong các chế phẩm và xử lý bề mặt với độ cứng từ 8 – 9 Mohs.

Hạt thép đa cạnh: Mềm hơn so với oxit nhôm nhưng vẫn có chất lượng và độ cứng cao. Thép đa cạnh cung cấp khả năng làm sạch nhanh chóng và hiệu quả, thích hợp cho quá trình chuẩn bị bề mặt trước khi sơn phủ.

Hạt thủy tinh: Hạt thủy tinh được sản xuất thành dạng hình cầu, rất hiệu quả trong việc làm mịn và đánh bóng bề mặt. Nó tạo ra bề mặt hoàn thiện sáng hơn.
